Beautiful Game: Wednesday’s Social TV Must-Reads (March 27)

Who says the U.S. doesn’t appreciate soccer? Last night, soccer dominated social mentions for both broadcast and cable, knocking NBC’s The Voice down to a third-place showing. We take a look at the numbers.

The ratings success of the NCAA basketball tournament — March Madness — is translating into digital success and not cannibalizing in-person attendance, we learn today.

NBC’s The Voice soared on its premiere night Monday, but, comparatively, fell 22 percent below Idol‘s premiere numbers from January.

Reports say CBS will acquire 50 percent of TV Guide Network for $100 million from Lionsgate and One Equity Partners.

Our pick for top story for the day is from Fierce Online Video, detailing Fox’s strategy for the second screen. It’s definitely worth a read.

Fox: Second-screen Apps Are ‘Here to Stay’

“Right now, the numbers are really small,” said Sherry Brennan, senior vice president of sales strategy and development for Fox Networks. “They’re like, if you get 4,000 check-ins on GetGlue, or something, that’s a lot. So the numbers are really way too small to really learn anything super meaningful at this point.”

Monday Night: ‘The Voice’ Premiere Grows From Fall, ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Takes a Big Hit

As for this week, however, The Voice seems very likely to outdo Idol. After two months back on the air, Idol pulled a 3.6 rating with adults 18-49 and 12.9 million viewers during last week’s Wednesday performance episode.
