College Football Owes a Debt of Gratitude to Beano Cook

Carroll Hoff “Beano” Cook died Wednesday at the age of 81. You’ll hear some mention of his passing this weekend, but probably not enough.

Very simply, college football would not be what it is today without Beano Cook.

College football on television became a big deal because of his efforts. College GameDay on ESPN got its start in 1987 with Cook as an analyst.

The host of the original College GameDay was Louisiana native and Saints preseason TV play-by-play voice Tim Brando, who, like most of us, learned of Beano’s death Thursday morning … right in the middle of his three-hour radio show on Yahoo! Sports Radio and the CBS Sports Network.
