March Madness returns to air tonight with the broadcast of Sweet 16 rounds on CBS and TBS and your second-screen device. The tournament, so far, has been both a ratings and social bonanza.

Last night, it was professional basketball that ignited social TV buzz as the NBA’s Chicago Bulls ended the Heat’s 27-game winning streak 101-97.

Taking at look at today’s stories, HBO’s Game of Thrones has been amping up the excitement for the season premiere on Facebook a month ahead. Is this setting a new standard?

Social TV Last Night

The ESPN cable broadcast of the NBA game between the Chicago Bulls and the Miami Heat generated nearly 937,000 mentions by more than 223,000 people on social media as the most-buzzed show Wednesday night.

American Idol on Fox had 279,000 mentions by 106,000 people to lead broadcast buzz. Falloff for the second spot on broadcast was dramatic, with NBC’s SVU getting 57,000 mentions, while the NHL match between the Canadiens and the Bruins had 338,000 mentions.
