While the digital space has had a growing presence at Mipcom in recent years, this year YouTube’s European channels launch was the talk of market, and made it abundantly clear – in case anyone needed reminding – that the TV industry is changing, and fast.

The market opened on Monday as word filtered through about which producers and channels had been picked by the Google-owned video site for its next wave of premium channel launches. It began the initiative in the US last year with 100 channels and a reported investment of some US$100m. In total, 60 new channels were announced at Mipcom – 46 in the UK, France and Germany, with the remainder to go live in the US. All3Media, Zodiak Active, Endemol, Hat Trick and BBC Worldwide are among the beneficiaries of YouTube’s support, and cash advances.
