The BCS Bowl Monday night in Miami was billed as  a clash of two legendary college football programs with the national championship to the winner. Hail Alabama, which made it no contest, beating Notre Dame resoundingly, and millions turned to their second screens to share their glee at the score, or the announcers.   • Preliminary TV rating for BCS championship is up 14% but impacted by Alabama rout

Alabama’s 42-14 rout of Notre Dame Monday night produced a 15.7 overnight rating, a 14-percent increase from the initial rating of Alabama’s 21-0 victory over LSU in 2012, according to Nielsen. That means 15.7 percent of U.S. households on average watched the game based on preliminary Nielsen numbers.

  • ‘Downton Abbey’ Season 3 premiere ratings quadruple average PBS primetime rating

“Downton” returned to an audience of 7.9 million viewers and a 5.1 household rating according to the Nielsen Fast National data. That is quadruple the average PBS primetime rating and is 96% higher than the rating for the Season 2 premiere a year ago. For its two-hour time slot, “Downton” was only beaten by CBS as far as the network ratings goes; ABC, FOX and NBC all trailed PBS.

This year, NBC’s lushly produced Sunday Night Football is expected to lead broadcast TV with the highest average viewership and ratings among all prime-time shows for the second TV season in a row.

  • Google TV arrives with on-screen cube interface

ASUS’ first Google TV device is coming and will arrive with 50GB of WebStorage cloud space and access to over 100,000 movies and TV shows through Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. It’ll arrive with its own “Qube interface,” unsurprisingly featuring a three-dimensional tetrahedron that rotates for access to your content. There’s also motion-sensing remote control support for gaming and other apps, while anyone with an Android phone will be able to download ASUS’ Mobile Remote app and steer from there.
