Tonight, American Idol continues auditions and 30 Rock has its next-to-last episode.

As the Super Bowl approaches, advertisers look to social media for engagement, reach and, of course, buzz. Volkswagen rocked the Super Bowl last year and yesterday released a teaser for its new Super Bowl ad. We could go all-Super Bowl, but we won’t.

TV Highlights

30 Rock is down to its final two shows for its seven-year-run tonight at 8 on NBC; auditions continue on American Idol at 8 on Fox; and Project Runway has its season premiere at 9 on Lifetime. Glee follows Idol at 9 on Fox, while NBC has a new episode of the 1600 Penn family comedy set in the White House at 9:30. In sports, the New York Knicks visit the Boston Celtics at 8 ET on TNT.

The absence of 30 Rock from the airwaves, as it finishes its final season, is a true loss to television in general. This was a show that was as smart as its creator-star, Tina Fey, offering layers upon layers of throwaway lines, metareferences, sight gags, quick cutaways, and sharp callbacks to previous episodes. 30 Rock was a compendium of the mores and dreams of postmillennial America, our best and worst selves reflected on screen.

Solid ‘Taste’ Premiere Pushes ABC to Tuesday Win

ABC won with adults 18-49 (1.9 rating) on a relatively quiet Tuesday, with the culinary reality competition The Taste. CBS still managed to top the rest of the broadcast networks in total viewers, with 10.5 million with all encores.

Twitter looks to become Instagram for video

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has posted a message that will get more attention than usual. It included a short video clip, embedded into the Tweet, using the Vine service that Twitter acquired last October.

Netflix shuffles the TV deck with “House of Cards”

On Feb. 1, all 13 hours of “House of Cards” will premiere on Netflix, a potentially landmark event that could herald the transition of television away from pricey cable bundles and toward the Internet — a process well under way at YouTube, Hulu, Yahoo and others, but not yet tested to the degree of “House of Cards.”

News International has reached a three-year deal with the Premier League to show highlight clips on the Internet and mobile devices from August. The deal is worth more than £20m, according to a source with knowledge of the bidding process.
