“Everybody wants to see a standard for analyzing social media because people are contributing their thoughts freely by the millions online in an unprecedented way,” said Len De Groot, co-creator of the “Voting With Your Tweet” project at the Knight Digital Media Center at the University of California, Berkeley. “And of course everyone wants that standard to be theirs.”

De Groot’s study is being carefully watched by academics, as are Indiana University’s Truthy project, Temple University’s Translating the Effectiveness of Media into Performance rating scale and the “human-trained statistical algorithm” being developed by the Harvard-related private firm Crimson Hexagon.
